| Adult Whole
Life Therapy Program:
Since 1982, the Whole
Life Therapy Program for Adults (WLT) has been attracting
people from across the country. This one-of-a-kind program
serves individuals who have recently experienced a significant
spinal cord injury or related neurological disorder by giving
them the opportunity to learn new techniques and skills
for recovering to an independent
life . Working
within individual and team environments, participants not
only make tremendous improvements in their own physical
abilities, but also make significant contributions toward
bettering the lives of their peers.
The Adult Whole Life program
addresses the participant’s physical, emotional, social, and
spiritual development. These four areas of development are
woven into a program of conventional and complementary therapies
in a series of individual and group sessions.
Participating
in Shake-A-Leg programs gives participants the opportunity to
expand their physical capabilities and explore and maximize
their human potential. Our
programs are guided by the belief that self-confidence and
self-esteem are the ingredients necessary for individuals with
severe disabilities to reach independence and full integration
into the community.
Our program is successful thanks,
in no small measure, to the commitment and skill of the trained
nurses, aides, therapists and mentors who dedicate themselves to
providing the highest quality service to the participants. The
considerable amenities of the Salve Regina University
dormitories allows for a comfortable, attractive and
communal-type environment where a sense of “family” can be
felt throughout the program.
The true “magic” of Shake-A-Leg
can be seen in its peer-to-peer challenge. Participants with
varying degrees of experience with their disability provide each
other with a rare wealth of knowledge. Those with similar
injuries teach one another and challenge each other to achieve
beyond what they thought possible.
This summer,
the Adult Whole Life Therapy session will be from Tuesday, June
17th to Thursday, July 17th, 2008. The
session is limited to (13) participants - first come, first
served. The cost of program fees, room and board for the four
weeks is $8,500 and need-based scholarships are available upon
request.
